What are rare languages?

Rare languages, often referred to as endangered or minority languages, are languages with a dwindling number of speakers, often to the point of being at risk of becoming extinct. The classification of rare languages is based on various factors, and linguists and organizations like UNESCO have established criteria to identify and categorize them.

Why are rare languages important?

Despite being termed 'rare,' rare languages are still commonly represented in populations. Some of the most common rare languages in the United States are Q'eqchi', Mam, Q'anjob'al, and K'iche'. These languages are of Mayan origin and are endemic to small portions of Guatemala.
